Project: Dynegy-Hennepin Pond 2E

Location:Hennepin, Illinois

Project Background & Description

Bloomsdale Excavating Company, Inc. was hired to construct a new fly ash containment pond for the Dynegy power plant in Hennepin, IL.

The project required the new fly ash containment pond to be constructed within the confines of the existing, abandoned ash pond. To accomplish this, Bloomsdale excavated more than 55,000 cubic yards of fly ash from the existing pond, which was stockpiled as waste material. Bloomsdale also imported clay material to place as a secondary line beneath a synthetic liner to better control the flow of water through the fly ash and into ground water. In order to safely move the clay to the construction site, Bloomsdale placed shot rock material over a geogrid to better stabilize the haul road.

“Bloomsdale did a great job. They completed the project on time and on budget. I would work with them again if I had the opportunity.”
– Dean Jones, CQA Manager, Civil Environmental Consultants, Inc.

Bloomsdale is not a signatory with any unions in the Hennepin area. Therefore, the project needed to be performed through a subcontractor. Bloomsdale built a relationship with a local contractor and worked together to complete the project on time and within budget.

Dynegy provides wholesale electric energy, capacity and ancillary services to utilities, cooperatives, municipalities and other energy companies. The Hennepin Power Station is capable of producing 289 Megawatts of electricity.
