PROJECT: Route 336 Macomb Bypass

PROJECT BACKGROUND
Bloomsdale Excavating was awarded the contract to create a four-lane divided highway on U.S. Routes 336/110. The Illinois Route 336 project consisted of pre-grading and drainage structures on a new alignment of U.S. Routes 336/110 and reconstruction of County Highway 14, located west of Macomb, IL.  The project owner required project completion in 220 days.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Tackling such a large-scale project would require a coordinated Bloomsdale team to be in sync on all fronts, as well as consider how the project would effect the community.  By tapping into the local workforce and subcontractors, Bloomsdale was able to make a significant impact on the Western IL  workforce.  Equally, the project required  monitoring the timing of the fall harvest and holiday breaks requiring communication with local farmers and the local university, Western Illinois University. 

Bloomsdale Excavating took a unique approach to this project, beginning as three separate jobsites, the north, south and middle. The general  superintendent managed four superintendents who supervised the different site areas.  The project superintendent coordinated daily operations with the individual project site area superintendents. Weekly meetings with the client allowed all parties to express their needs or concerns. 

The project included more than 10 miles of grading (six miles of mainline highway and four miles of side roads, service roads and ramps), clearing over 70 acres and utility installations. Crews were set to haul over 3.5 million cubic yards of material, move and transport 161,000 tons of imported rock and  perform more than 400,000 cubic yards of ditch cutting. The contract called for teams to install and relocate approximately 10,000 feet of municipal  utilities, including more than 6,500 feet of storm drain piping, 12 box culverts, 82,000 square yards of riprap, 64,000 feet of right-of-way fencing and 120,000 feet of wick drains, along with planting 3,500 trees.

Crews poured 2,200 yards of concrete box culverts, placed 120,000 square yards of rip-rap, imported 95,000 tons of rock fill, excavated over 3 million cubic yards of material (averaging 23,200 cubic yards per day), installed 40,000 linear feet of chain link fence, placed 150,000 cubic yards of topsoil and excavated and wasted over 100,000 cubic yards of unsuitable material.

Project Success:

Bloomsdale Excavating was recognized by IDOT at the 2014 Contractor of the Year Awards as the  recipient of an Award of Excellence for this project.
