Project: St. Francis Basin Scour Repairs

Project Background & Description

The St. Francis River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, running about 426 miles in southeastern Missouri and northeastern Arkansas.  The river drains a mostly rural area and forms part of the Missouri-Arkansas state line along the western side of the Missouri Bootheel.

Project Summary

Bloomsdale Excavating was contracted to place rip rap along two sections of the West Basin Drainage Channel to prevent further bank erosion.  This included placing 161,000 tons of 400 pound rip rap along the basin bank. 

Working in a flood plain generally has challenges.  The West Basin was no exception with consistently wet ground conditions causing a delay in the start of the project and making delivery of the heavy rip rap problematic throughout the project.  Additionally, having limited access to the site meant timing of deliveries and project communication between all parties was critical and based on weather for the duration of the project.

Project Success

Despite getting a late start due to wet ground conditions, Bloomsdale Excavating was able to complete the project ahead of schedule, saving the client significant costs on the $1.2 million project.
