PROJECT: USACE River Obstruction Missouri/Kansas
CLIENT: USACE Kansas City District
LOCATION Kansas City, MO – Leavenworth, KS
TIMELINE February 2024 – March 2024
PROJECT SUMMARY:
Working as the general contractor, Bloomsdale Excavating teamed up with Michels Construction to provide riverway obstruction and debris removal for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District. Utilizing a multi-tooth rock ripper, single shank ripper, and a Xcentric XR122 hydraulic ripper, this project involved ripping solid bedrock from the bottom of the navigation channel, excavating the ripped bedrock to then be used as stone protection on the shoreline. The order in which operations were managed, was to first reach the rock outcropping removal (Kansas City), then reach the unknown obstruction removal (Kansas City), then reach the bridge pier removal (Leavenworth), and finally reach the tributary debris removal (Leavenworth). With the help of Michels Construction, the Bloomsdale/Michels team utilized 3 material barges for the transportation of excavated materials. Tracking the daily and total production, the team achieved a production of 1,500 tons, or 1,000 CY per day of removal. This project took just under 1 month from start to finish.
